Health experts say axing plan to block sales of tobacco products to next generation will cost thousands of lives
minus-squareXbSuper@lemmy.worldlinkfedilinkEnglisharrow-up1arrow-down1·10 months agoYes, paid for by the exorbitant taxes on cigarettes.
minus-squareWoodlandAlliance@lemm.eelinkfedilinkarrow-up2arrow-down1·10 months agoSo if banning cigarettes would support healthcare infrastructure, based on what you just told me that would be the government’s responsibility.
minus-squareXbSuper@lemmy.worldlinkfedilinkEnglisharrow-up1arrow-down1·10 months agoI think you missed something. Banning cigarettes takes money away from healthcare, it doesn’t put more into it. Smokers wind up paying almost 10x what they cost the system over their lives. Banning that income will only make things worse.
minus-squareWoodlandAlliance@lemm.eelinkfedilinkarrow-up1arrow-down1·10 months agoCigarettes cause health problems, therefore banning them lowers the strain on a healthcare system. If the issue is truly just financial there are other ways to get that money.
minus-squareXbSuper@lemmy.worldlinkfedilinkEnglisharrow-up1arrow-down1·10 months agoExcept they also have to step on your rights, and body autonomy in order to do so. Let me aak you this as well… Do you support the war on drugs?
minus-squareWoodlandAlliance@lemm.eelinkfedilinkarrow-up1arrow-down1·10 months agoYou’re changing the topic. The government has the right to ban cigarettes because they have the right to support healthcare infrastructure. Whether or not they should ban them is a whole separate topic.
minus-squareXbSuper@lemmy.worldlinkfedilinkEnglisharrow-up1arrow-down1·10 months agoWhether or not they have the right, was never the argument here, it’s always been about whether they should or not. Dodging my question because it backs you into a corner really doesn’t help your side either.
minus-squareWoodlandAlliance@lemm.eelinkfedilinkarrow-up1arrow-down1·10 months ago Seems like a good thing to me. Let people decide for themselves, it’s not the government’s job to tell them what they can and can’t put in their body. Your exact words. You said nothing about if a government “should” do anything, you said it’s not their job. You lost the argument just move on.
minus-squareXbSuper@lemmy.worldlinkfedilinkEnglisharrow-up1arrow-down1·10 months agoI will move on, but only because you’ve started arguing on bad faith. Do better.
